Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between independent and dependent claims?

Independent claims stand alone and define the invention without reference to other claims. Dependent claims refer back to and further limit another claim (e.g., "The method of claim 1, wherein..."). The USPTO charges additional fees for more than 3 independent claims.

How are excess claim fees calculated?

The base USPTO filing fee includes 3 independent claims and 20 total claims. Each additional independent claim costs $320 (large entity), and each additional total claim over 20 costs $100. Multiple dependent claims incur an additional $900 fee.

What are multiple dependent claims?

A multiple dependent claim depends on more than one other claim (e.g., "The method of claims 1 or 2, wherein..."). These are permitted under U.S. patent law but incur an additional $900 fee and can complicate claim interpretation during prosecution.

Is my data secure?

Yes. This tool runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your patent claims are never transmitted to any server. When you close or refresh the page, all data is cleared. This is ideal for analyzing confidential unpublished patent applications.
